Strategic Scientific Workshop Programme 2025
Call for Applications
Application deadline: July 28, 2025
The University of Bayreuth Centre of International Excellence “Alexander von Humboldt”, in short “Bayreuth Humboldt Centre” (BHC), promotes excellent research at the University of Bayreuth (UBT) and advances the internationalisation of research and networking with the best universities worldwide.
Effective immediately, the BHC is offering funding for
Strategic Scientific Workshops
- open to all disciplines* -
(Please note the specific rulings for African Studies at the bottom of this page.)
International Excellence – Programme Goals
The BHC supports academic exchange across existing boundaries: between disciplines, between different cultures and countries, between established and younger researchers. All Strategic Scientific Workshops are expected to deepen existing or establish new ties with international researchers from abroad with a clear objective to create sustainable research networks.
Experience Bayreuth – Collaboration with Strategic Partners
The BHC aims to strengthen excellent research of strategic importance as exemplified in its Focus Areas. We invite senior faculty members from UBT to cooperate with at least one international partner institution to submit a joint application for a subject-specific workshop with well-defined scientific and strategic objectives. The latter includes, for example, the development of sustainable scientific or teaching collaborations with international institutions, e.g. from the University’s strategic hubs or key regions. Support for each workshop is subject to an event’s complexity and partner location and may be granted up to 20,000 EUR. Applications are welcome from all disciplines*.
Application Requirements
We award the Strategic Scientific Workshops to applicants from UBT with challenging and innovative research projects of top academic quality through a highly competitive, strictly merit-based selection process. The all-important selection criteria are the academic excellence of the applicants and of the proposed cooperative workshop, as well as the strategic significance to the UBT’s internationalization and research priorities, as well as sustainability of the endeavour. The workshops should take place on campus or in the surrounding region for a minimum of two days. For more information on the application and selection process, see our Application Guidelines for Strategic Scientific Workshops.
Application Deadline
Please submit your complete application via our online form by July 28, 2025.

* Members of the Cluster of Excellence (as defined by § 11 (3) of the Cluster Rules) cannot apply if the research focus of the application is on African Studies. This is due to regulations of the German Research Foundation stipulating that the Centre cannot provide funding to enhance resources of the university’s Cluster of Excellence.
